One of the greatest attributes of Pinot noir is its ability to take on characteristics from where it is grown. Each vineyard site is unique in its combination of soil, slope, elevation and climate. Decisions made in the vineyard add more variations - rootstock, clone and spacing. From the highest quality care and management of our vineyard sites, to the selection of the best barrels from each vineyard, our vineyard and winemaking teams place intense focus on the crafting of these rare Single Vineyard Pinot noirs.

Members receive shipments four times per year in March, May, September and November*. You choose the quantity of wine they would like to receive - in increments of 2, 3, 4, 6 or 12 bottles. The 3 and 4 bottles shipments are the most popular, allowing members to enjoy a bottle upon arrival and save the others for future celebrations.

While our 2008 Winderlea Vineyard Pinot noir will be ready to enjoy in 2011, it will develop and gain complexity for at least 8 - 10 years.

“This 2008 Winderlea Pinot noir has flavors
of blueberries, plums, and brandy-soaked black
cherries; also hints of rose petal, lavender,
allspice and nutmeg. The texture is smooth and
rich, with a nice perception of sweetness. Consider
pairing this Pinot noir with lamb and grilled
meats.”
Dave Paige, Winemaker

Wine Background:

John and Sally Bauers began planting this historic “Dundee Hills Vineyard” property in 1974 and yielded some great wines over the years. The vineyard was then sold to former Oregon governor, Neil Goldschmidt, and his wife Diana in 1998.

Under Adelsheim’s vineyard management, all varieties but Pinot noir were then grafted over or removed and replanted. All new plantings were densely spaced “Dijon” clone vines on devigorating rootstocks with irrigation. In addition, a transition from traditional farming to sustainable, organic viticultural practices worked to insure intensely flavored grapes, while minimizing the farming impact on the land.

In October 2006, “Goldschmidt Vineyard” was purchased by Donna Morris and Bill Sweat and renamed “Winderlea Vineyard”. Even as Bill and Donna have established their own brand from this iconic vineyard, we continue to benefit from one acre of clone 667 that we planted.

Growing Season:

The 2008 growing season began slowly with a cooler than normal spring for the months of March and April. Buds began to open around April 26th, giving the growing season a bit of a delayed start.

Temperatures picked up considerably in May and the vines accelerated shoot growth, but bloom was still slightly later than normal.

The favorable conditions surrounding bloom near the end of June continued well into August. Veraison became apparent in mid-August, followed by gorgeous ripening conditions in September.

Hand-picking occurred on October 1st, allowing the fruit to fully ripen and bask in what could be called a textbook Indian summer for Oregon.

Vineyard:

Winderlea Vineyard is situated on Worden Hill Road in the Dundee Hills AVA, one of the north Willamette Valley’s most respected viticultural areas.

The vineyard’s south exposure, 480 to 570-foot elevation, and volcanic-origin, clay-loam soils are ideally suited to ripening Pinot noir.

This wine is produced with grapes from one of the vineyard’s densely-spaced, replanted blocks.

The clone is from Burgundy, named “667”, and grafted onto the lowest vigor rootstock available, Riparia Gloire. This combination ripens early and gives very rich wines.

Winemaking:

Production of this Winderlea Pinot noir followed Adelsheim Vineyard’s traditional winemaking approach: gentle destemming, cold soak for greater flavor and color extraction, and fermentation in temperature-controlled,open-top fermenters.

The wine underwent secondary, malolactic fermentation in small, medium-toast French oak barrels (one-third new) and was aged for 11 months.

The wine was bottled on August 12, 2009.

Cellaring:
Under optimum cellar conditions, this wine will certainly improve through 2018, perhaps through 2028.

“This complex wine exhibits layered aromas
of rasperries, strawberries, red currants and a
hint of spice. On the palate, the wine shows
firm acidity followed by hints of dark
chocolate and a plush, velvety mouthfeel. It
would pair wonderfully with grilled salmon,
domestic and wild fowl, and other savory
main dishes.”
Dave Paige, Winemaker

Wine Background:
• Lynn and Jack Loacker, co-owners of Adelsheim Vineyard, purchased this 120- acre site on Ribbon Ridge in 1995.
• With high-density plantings of Oregon’s traditional clones - “Pommard” and “Wädenswil” - and the newer “Dijon” series, this 60-acre vineyard is now our most important source of Pinot noir grapes.
• Only the very best lots go into our single vineyard bottlings; this 2008 vintage Ribbon Springs wine is only our sixth such wine from this vineyard.

Growing Season:
• The 2008 growing season began slowly with a cooler than normal spring for the months of March and April. Buds began to open around April 26th, giving the growing season a bit of a delayed start.
• Temperatures picked up considerably in May and the vines accelerated shoot growth, but bloom was still slightly later than normal.
• The favorable conditions surrounding bloom near the end of June continued well into August. Veraison became apparent in mid-August, followed by gorgeous ripening conditions in September.
• Hand-picking occurred on October 1 and 15, allowing the fruit to fully ripen and bask in what could be called a textbook Indian summer for Oregon.

Vineyards:
• At 400 - 600 feet above sea level in the Ribbon Ridge appellation of the Chehalem Mountains, Ribbon Springs Vineyard is considered to be a medium elevation site.
• It is oriented largely to the southeast and features many large, evenly-sloped blocks.
• The soils are sandstone-based, sedimentary in origin, and so would tend towards drought-stress problems in our usual July & August dry spell if not for the eponymous springs, and a reservoir, which can serve as a source for light drip irrigation if necessary.

Winemaking:
• After hand-harvesting, the grapes were gently destemmed into open top fermenters, followed by a four to six day cold soak for greater flavor and color extraction.
• The grapes were then inoculated with a commercial yeast and punched down two or three times per day during a 6 day alcoholic fermentation.
• After pressing, the wine was transferred into traditional small French oak barrels (35% new) where it was aged for approximately 10 months.
• This intensely red-fruited wine was made from three separate blocks that were planted with the UCD 5 clone of Pinot noir (“Pommard”) between 1996 and
1998.
• This wine was bottled on August 11, 2009.

Hand-picking occurred on September 29 and October 1.

Vineyard:

Boulder Bluff Vineyard is adjacent to our oldest vineyard, Quarter Mile Lane, in the Chehalem Mountains AVA (American Viticultural Area).

This vineyard is sited between 485 and 625 feet above sea level on a steep southwest slope. It is a very warm site due to its orientation and the many basalt boulders on the property which hold the heat.

The soils are basaltic-origin, clay-loam soils, which store enough moisture to get the grapevines through our annual summer dry spells without irrigation.

Winemaking:

After being hand-harvested, the grapes were gently destemmed into open top fermenters, followed by a four to six day cold soak for greater flavor and color extraction.

The grapes were then inoculated with a commercial yeast and punched down two or three times per day during a 6 day alcoholic fermentation.

After pressing, the wine was transferred into traditional small French oak barrels (29% new) where it was aged for approximately 10 months.

This wine was bottled on August 12, 2009.

“With its broad array of origins and clones,
this wine displays both red and black fruit
aromas (cherries and raspberries), on the nose
and the palate. In addition, one finds a light
touch of brown spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice).
True to our house style, it is elegantly
textured with satiny, polished tannins showing in
the finish. Pair it with salmon or ahi, veal or
pork, poultry (think duck) or beef, or hearty
vegetarian entrees.”
Dave Paige, Winemaker

Cellaring: Under optimum cellar conditions, this wine will certainly improve through 2018, and perhaps through 2028.

WINE BACKGROUND:
The first vintage of this Pinot noir was in 1979.
Our objective in producing this wine has always been a classic, intense, and elegant wine that pairs well with the foods we like to eat.
By blending the diverse flavors and textures of multiple vineyards, clones and elevations, we produce a richly supple and focused wine that typifies what Pinot noir can achieve each vintage in the northern Willamette Valley.
With this wine, our 30th vintage, our experience shows – we’ve long been acknowledged as producing a reference standard for the “Oregon style”.

VINEYARDS:
This 2008 vintage wine is 70% estate grown, with the majority of the grapes having been harvested from seven of our vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains AVA (66%) and one of our vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA (4%). The remaining 30% is derived from seven other vineyards in various sub-regions within the Willamette Valley.
Approximately 75% of the wine comes from several clones brought intoOregon from Burgundy, 20% is UCD 5 (“Pommard”), and the final 5% either UCD 1A (“Wädenswil”) or a clonal-blend.
Soil type, appellation, vine age, and elevation varied considerably in these lots, offering many options to create a unified blend.

WINEMAKING
After hand-harvesting, the grapes were gently de-stemmed into open-top fermenters, followed by a four to six day cold soak for greater flavor and color extraction.
The grapes were then inoculated with a commercial yeast and punched down two or three times per day during their 7 day fermentation.
After pressing, the wine was transferred into traditional small French oak barrels (20% new) where it was aged for approximately 10 months.
The final blend was bottled over a week-long period, August 3 - 10, 2009.

Hand-picking began the last week of September and continued into mid-October, allowing the fruit to fully ripen and bask in what could be called a textbook Indian summer for Oregon.

2008 Quarter Mile Lane Vineyard Pinot Noir
Chehalem Mountains AVA

WINE BACKGROUND:

Planted in 1972, Quarter Mile Lane is our oldest estate vineyard.

In 1971, while looking for property in Yamhill County, David and Ginny Adelsheim had a chance encounter with Dick Erath.

After meeting Bill Blosser and attending a May Day party with the Letts, the Adelsheims’ search for “property” turned into a search for “south-facing slope with Jory clay-loam soil.”

They found such a site, 19 acres covered with poppies and vetch, in May of that year.

VINEYARD:

Quarter Mile Lane Vineyard lies partway up the south side of the Chehalem Mountains on basaltic-origin, clay-loam soils, which store enough moisture to get the grapevines through our annual summer droughts without irrigation.

While the site is at a relatively high elevation (just below 700 feet), its largely southern exposure provides some compensation. In a vintage permitting long hang time, like 2008, Quarter Mile Lane Vineyard takes on magical qualities. The grapes ripen slowly with incredible complexity, intensity of flavor and structure.

This single vineyard bottling is produced with grapes from the 2.4-acre Block 1. That block was planted in 1974 with what was sold to us as “Pommard” clone, but is more likely “Martini” clone, or possibly a mix of the two.

“This classic example of Quarter Mile
Lane Pinot noir exhibits sultry red and
black cherry fruit supported by a hints of
cinnamon spice and eucalyptus, reminiscent of
herbal fruit-infused tea. The wine’s firm tannin
structure will soften as the wine ages. Enjoy
from 2011 well into the wine’s second decade.”
Dave Paige, Winemaker

WINEMAKING:

Production of this Quarter Mile Lane Pinot noir followed Adelsheim Vineyard’s traditional winemaking approach: gentle destemming, cold soak for greater flavor and color extraction, and fermentation in temperature-controlled, open-top fermenters.

The wine underwent secondary, malolactic fermentation in small, medium-toast French oak barrels (1/3 new) and was aged for 10 months.

The wine was bottled on August 12, 2009.

Hand picking began the last week of September and continued into mid-October, allowing the fuit to fully ripen and bask in what could be called a textbook Indian summer for Oregon.

The grapes for this wine were picked on October 14.

WINE BACKGROUND:
• Lynn and Jack Loacker, co-owners of Adelsheim Vineyard, purchased this 9.91-
acre vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains in 2000.
• Three Pinot noir blocks were used in this bottling:
- The first selection came to us in 1974 from Oregon wine pioneer Charles
Coury and was the original material planted at our Quarter Mile Lane
Vineyard.
- The second was selected by Gary Andrus and planted in 1995 at Archery
Summit’s Red Hills Estate.
- The third was French Clone 777, brought from Burgundy to Oregon State
University in 1987 under the instigation of David Adelsheim.
• This 2008 vintage Boulder Bluff Pinot noir is our second single vineyard wine
from this property.

GROWING SEASON:
• The 2008 growing season began slowly with a cooler than normal spring for the
months of March and April. Buds began to open around April 26th, giving the
growing season a bit of a delayed start.
• Temperatures picked up considerably in May and the vines accelerated shoot
growth, but bloom was still slightly later than normal.
• The favorable conditions surrounding bloom near the end of June continued
well into August. Veraison became apparent in mid-August, followed by gorgeous
ripening conditions in September.
• Hand-picking occurred on September 29 and October 1.
Vineyard
• Boulder Bluff Vineyard is adjacent to our oldest vineyard, Quarter Mile Lane,
in the Chehalem Mountains AVA (American Viticultural Area).
• This vineyard is sited between 485 and 625 feet above sea level on a steep
southwest slope. It is a very warm site due to its orientation and the many
basalt boulders on the property which hold the heat.
• The soils are basaltic-origin, clay-loam soils, which store enough moisture to
get the grapevines through our annual summer dry spells without irrigation.

WINEMAKING:
• After being hand-harvested, the grapes were gently destemmed into open top
fermenters, followed by a four to six day cold soak for greater flavor and color
extraction.
• The grapes were then inoculated with a commercial yeast and punched down
two or three times per day during a 6 day alcoholic fermentation.
• After pressing, the wine was transferred into traditional small French oak
barrels (29% new) where it was aged for approximately 10 months.
• This wine was bottled on August 12, 2009.
