Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Joey Harrington is not only a former NFL quarterback and philanthropist, he’s also an avid wine collector and supporter of the Oregon wine industry. In this unique wine tasting seminar Sam, David, and Joey will be discussing the following wine collecting topics:

· Understanding Wine Collecting – How to get started and what is important vs. nice-to-have for a beginner

· Understanding Bottle Aging & Ageability – How wines develop in the bottle, how bottle size matters, and how wine making approach, vintages and regions matter

· Strategies for Building a Wine Collection – Developing a collection theme or focus, understanding “futures”, and managing very large collections

· Wine Collecting Pitfalls – Understanding the importance of provenance, the risks and rewards of buying collections and buying at auctions

· Q&A – Sam, David, and Joey will answer your questions and offer advice from their unique experiences

Seating is limited, so register now to secure your spot and support the Harrington Family Foundation for this unique tasting and learning opportunity with Oregon legends Joey Harrington and David Adelsheim!

HOW WINE GETS ITS SPARKLE ON

Presented by Sam Schmitt, CS, CWE

Nothing says celebration like a bottle of bubbly! But do you know the difference between Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, and other Sparkling Wines or how these wines get their bubbles? Did you know that Champagne isn’t the birthplace of sparkling wine?  Did you know that Dom Perignon was a real person and while his name was lent to one of the great Champagne’s, he was originally instructed to figure out how to rid his monastery of the “devil’s wine?”

In this special seminar we will explain the history of sparkling wine, its many production methods, how sparkling wines from around the world differ and present Adelsheim’s first sparkling wines in an exclusive tasting! Join us for this holiday season special event — space is limited so sign up now to secure your seat.

THE (RE)EMERGENCE OF CHARDONNAY IN THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY

Presented by Sam Schmitt, CS, CWE

Willamette Valley Chardonnay has had a sordid history. From the beginning of Oregon's modern wine industry in the mid 1960’s, Chardonnay was envisioned along side Pinot noir as one of the reigning grapes of Willamette Valley. However, producing world class Chardonnay proved to be more challenging in the formative years of the region and it faded into obscurity as a disappointing footnote.

In the 1990’s, Chardonnay made a triumphant comeback with the import of new clonal selections from France and today, Willamette Valley Chardonnay is showing it’s true potential as a world class wine of distinct character.

In this tasting session, we will discuss the early history and challenges to producing high quality chardonnay in the Willamette Valley, the relationship between Burgundy and the Willamette Valley and its contrast to California with representative wines, and the revolutionary changes that have taken place to make Willamette Valley Chardonnay a contemporary benchmark for new world Chardonnay that deserves a place on your holiday dinner table!

SATURDAY SEMINAR: FROM THE BUD TO THE BOTTLE

How Grapes are Grown and Wine is Made.

Wine making is among the oldest crafts dating back thousands of years and has been credited as a
major factor behind the rise and expansion of human civilization worldwide. Surprisingly, in spite of advanced technology, wine makers from ancient times would probably feel right at home in the wineries of today.

The art and science of grape growing, harvesting, fermenting, and aging wines developed by monks
more than a millennia ago remain at the foundation of modern wine making. In this wine tasting seminar, we will discuss the anatomy and lifecycle of the grape, and some of the history and basics of
white and red wine production from the bud to the bottle.

Presented by Sam Schmitt, CS, CWE.

Complimentary for Club Adelsheim members; $25/person for non-members.

Pinot noir is a wine revered for being particularly expressive of this sense of place, and we’ll taste several Pinots that clearly show how different they can be.

SATURDAY SEMINAR: A PROFOUND SENSE OF PLACE

Understanding the Willamette Valley’s AVAs through Pinot noir

Since the beginning of Oregon’s modern wine industry, Pinot noir has been the cornerstone wine grape that propelled it onto the world stage.  In fact, Pinot noir represents more than 75% of the acres under vine in the Willamette Valley, the highest concentration of a single variety in one region anywhere in the world.  With this much investment in one grape variety, differentiation not only between Oregon and the rest of the world, but also between the different sub-AVAs of the Willamette Valley has become a focal topic of discussion and emphasized our regional mission to produce terroir-driven wines.

In this tasting seminar, we will discuss the history leading to the dominance of Pinot noir in the Willamette Valley, the go-to clones, the collaborative approach of the industry, the characteristics of each of Willamette Valley’s sub-AVAs and how their unique sense of place is expressed in the wines through some of the best terroir-driven examples of Pinot noir from each AVA.
